This article is part of a series previewing the Terriers’ 2014 football opponents. The Citadel travels to Gibbs Stadium on October 4 to kick off SoCon play.
Wofford's foray into the newly shaped SoCon begins on October 4 against The Citadel. The Terriers have defeated the Bulldogs each time for the last fifteen years, the most recent being last season’s 21-10 victory a week after the demoralizing 69-0 loss to Baylor to open the season. The Bulldogs finished last season 5-7 (4-4 SoCon).
The Citadel is entering 2014 with a new coach, Mike Houston, who led Lenoir-Rhyne to last year's Division II National Championship game, in which they lost to Northwest Missouri State. Houston replaces Kevin Higgins, who left for an assistant spot at Wake Forest.
The Citadel's 2013 Season
The Bulldogs got off to a rocky start in 2013, falling by three points, 32-29, to Big South opponent Charleston Southern. Wofford then lengthened The Citadel’s losing streak with their 21-10 win. Following a 28-21 SoCon win over Western Carolina, the Bulldogs dropped a hard-fought matchup against Old Dominion by a 59-58 margin. A home win vs. Appalachian State came in between losses to Furman (24-17) and Georgia Southern (28-21). The Citadel then lost to Chattanooga (24-17) before winning three straight, against Samford (28-26), Elon (35-10), and VMI (31-10) in the Military Classic of the South. Clemson finished up the Bulldogs’ 5-7 season with a 52-6 throttling.
The Game
On October 4, the Terriers will get a chance to extend their win streak over The Citadel to sixteen games. The Bulldogs have been a tough opponent in recent years, and both clubs are facing some tough losses(QB Ben Dupree a notable loss for The Citadel), so Wofford's SoCon opener should be an intriguing game, one that should set the tone for the 2014 season.
