Appalachian State just shocked Michigan (yes, that Michigan) and put FCS football on the map. A mere two weeks later, the Mountaineers made their way into Gibbs Stadium riding a 17-game winning streak (leading D-1) and all the pride in the world. Little Wofford, one of D-1's smallest schools, actually was 2-1, but they didn't have the pleasure of winning their FBS game, a 38-17 defeat at the hands of the NC State Wolfpack. In front of a record crowd (11,042 - if you've ever seen Gibbs, that's pretty amazing), the Terriers defeated the #1 Mountaineers 42-31.
Some Afterthoughts:
- Wofford was actually featured in Sports Illustrated's "Who's Hot Who's Not" section on October 1, 2007.
- Yes, Appalachian State did win the FCS title that year, but the Terriers had some postseason success as well: defeating #3 and undefeated Montana 23-22 at Montana in the first round of the playoffs, before falling to Richmond.
