Game Throwback: 2007 vs. Appalachian State

USA Today Sports Images
If 2007 is too long ago to remember vividly, let's recap.

Appalachian State just shocked Michigan (yes, that Michigan) and put FCS football on the map.  A mere two weeks later, the Mountaineers made their way into Gibbs Stadium riding a 17-game winning streak (leading D-1) and all the pride in the world.  Little Wofford, one of D-1's smallest schools, actually was 2-1, but they didn't have the pleasure of winning their FBS game, a 38-17 defeat at the hands of the NC State Wolfpack.  In front of a record crowd (11,042 - if you've ever seen Gibbs, that's pretty amazing), the Terriers defeated the #1 Mountaineers 42-31.

Some Afterthoughts:

  • Wofford was actually featured in Sports Illustrated's "Who's Hot Who's Not" section on October 1, 2007.
  • Yes, Appalachian State did win the FCS title that year, but the Terriers had some postseason success as well: defeating #3 and undefeated Montana 23-22 at Montana in the first round of the playoffs, before falling to Richmond.
