Wofford successfully rebounds from setback, notches largest league victory as of yet

It's mighty refreshing to be able to look back on a victory--especially after just suffering a crushing defeat at the hands of The Citadel--and the Terriers' effort against Western Carolina on Saturday evening made it that much better to reflect upon. With its largest SoCon margin of victory as of yet, Wofford advanced to 5-1 in conference play in a nineteen-point dismissal of the visiting Catamounts.

It's taken a short while for the sting emanating from Wofford's crushing three-point defeat at The Citadel to subside. The good news is there's something to learn from this, just like any other moment in the world of basketball. With this instance, though, the Terriers will be constantly reminded of what needs to improve -- their memory jogged with a stubborn tick on the loss column.

It's been a harsh, laborious stretch of the fledgling year for Wofford men's basketball, a squad in the midst of their best seasonal start in decades. As if the non-conference slate, studded with foes inferior and nationally-acclaimed alike, wasn't rough enough for this outfit, which remains the lone Southern Conference team unconquered in league play, injuries, fatigue, and a guaranteed best shot from any conference opponent are just a few of the forces secretly ravaging this team.

Wofford put four footballs on the ground yesterday afternoon, and lost three of them. Thankful streaks of momentum were killed in an instant; in the end, The Citadel only needed three yards to win, and had four plays to get it.

But they didn't.

On a sunny fall afternoon at Gibbs Stadium, Wofford opened their 2014 SoCon schedule against The Citadel. The Terriers have not lost to the Bulldogs since 1998; they are seeking their sixteenth consecutive triumph over the squad from Charleston, S.C.

Wofford and The Citadel, both historically triple option-based programs, will meet at Gibbs Stadium at 1:30 P.M. Eastern, as they both look to start off the SoCon schedule 1-0.

Prior to the 1998 Wofford vs. The Citadel tilt, co-owners of the Spartanburg staple Beacon Drive-In, who were graduates of the respective institutions, struck a bet that would mark the advent of a conference tradition.

2014 Football Preview: The Citadel

This article is part of a series previewing the Terriers’ 2014 football opponents. The Citadel travels to Gibbs Stadium on October 4 to kick off SoCon play.

Wofford's foray into the newly shaped SoCon begins on October 4 against The Citadel.  The Terriers have defeated the Bulldogs each time for the last fifteen years, the most recent being last season’s 21-10 victory a week after the demoralizing 69-0 loss to Baylor to open the season. The Bulldogs finished last season 5-7 (4-4 SoCon).

The Citadel is entering 2014 with a new coach, Mike Houston, who led Lenoir-Rhyne to last year's Division II National Championship game, in which they lost to Northwest Missouri State.  Houston replaces Kevin Higgins, who left for an assistant spot at Wake Forest.
