Wofford and The Citadel, both historically triple option-based programs, will meet at Gibbs Stadium at 1:30 P.M. Eastern, as they both look to start off the SoCon schedule 1-0.
Although the Bulldogs hold the edge in the all-time series, 40-25-1, they haven't won a contest since 1998. That's right, the Terriers have taken fifteen consecutive matchups with The Citadel, and are aiming for number sixteen tomorrow afternoon.
Standing in the way is first-year head coach Mike Houston's Bulldogs (1-3), a squad that is averaging 300 rushing yards a game and fresh off a dominant 37-14 victory over Gardner-Webb, an opponent that eluded the Terriers a few short weeks ago.
In all, The Citadel has outgained their adversaries by 743 yards on the ground.
Don't discount the Terriers, though.
They average 305 rushing yards a game, and have gained over 200 more yards on the ground than the Bulldogs.
More than all the statistical variations, however, both teams—Wofford especially—have something to prove.
They, of course, want to make a statement within the conference. That's what every member strives to do. Wofford, though, needs to salvage some spirit and regain some confidence to make it this season.
NOTES: The Terriers do not have anymore late evening contests on the 2014 schedule; all of the remaining games will kick off no later than 3:30 P.M. Eastern. ... Running back Will Gay, along with tight ends Taylor Bragg and Mike Nicklas, did not see action last Saturday vs. UVA-Wise. Quarterback Brad Butler is still out with mono. ... Wofford has notched a victory in their last four consecutive Southern Conference openers, including a 21-10 disposal of The Citadel last season.
THE GAME: This one will be close. That's not in depth by any means, but it looks to be what fans will see on the Gibbs Stadium turf tomorrow afternoon. Picking against Wofford is difficult; it will be a tough, physically challenging game for the Terriers. However, that challenge is healthy for our squad, and Wofford will be itching to get out and play against this Bulldog squad.
Wofford 27, The Citadel 24
