With the Southern Conference basketball tournament this weekend, it seems fitting to look back at some of the other, more obscure postseason tournaments in which Wofford has competed over the years.

Saturday's Wofford-ETSU game historic, like the last one
It's been a while since Wofford met ETSU on the gridiron.
The Terriers (2-1) will open conference play Saturday with a midday matchup against the Buccaneers, which is in just its second season back from a hiatus lasting over a decade. Following the 2003 season, ETSU made the decision to drop its football program and subsequently departed the league in other sports.

More than football
Just as Wofford was beginning to hit its stride in Thursday's season opener at Tennessee Tech, tragedy almost struck.

In 2000, Wofford heated up in ice storm
Wofford's history against FBS opposition is rocky, dashed with a hint of heartbreak.
Since moving up to Div. I-AA in 1995, the Terriers are just 1-20 against upper division teams and have dropped seventeen straight such games since 2000.
In the 2000 season finale, Wofford accomplished what has eluded it for now fifteen years. And it came in conditions icier than the Terriers' dismal track record against FBS members.

Free throws, solid rebounding keep Wofford afloat at Presbyterian
Wofford took its first lead over Presbyterian midway through the first half and never gave it up in a 68-58 victory.
Not at easy as it sounds.

Wofford's battle with Idaho shoved into same old category
Wofford is no stranger to walking off higher-division fields with a collective dejectedness about the team.

A player's coach: Romero sent Breitenstein on path to success
In the world of college football, where a program's luck can shift on a single play and attitudes swirl around wildly during the course of a season, distinct eras can't help but pop up.

In 1981, eventual national champion Clemson came calling, and Wofford answered
Wofford, as is the case with a bevy of other programs competing in the aggressive FCS tier of Division I football play, has often served as a kind of extempore scheduling afterthought. While the unexpected shift may, in some important respects, irk the smaller outfit, that's the just the nature of the sport.

Although Wofford 'ran out of time' in NCAA tournament, they made it worthwhile
They get it. With dejected faces and stunned, yet respectful dispositions, the Wofford men’s basketball team made their way past the handshake line, the raucous din of the crowd, the loss. The feeling of the loss, that is. Suffering a setback in a game is one thing; you can learn from your mistakes, implement, improve – we’ve all heard the story. However, the sting that comes with a loss is something that lingers, even for the greatest of squads.

There's no denying Wofford anymore
When the Arkansas Razorbacks, led by now-Florida assistant John Pelphrey, clinched an NCAA tournament bid in 2008, no one associated with the program likely thought that a dismal six-year drought would occur. Likewise, no one expected that the very next time the Hogs would earn a berth, it would pit them against the Wofford Terriers.

More than any statistic, selflessness and respect constitute this program
No one said that it would be easy. As we begin with that startling, yet obvious revelation, it's clear to see just how tough it is for a defending league champion to even make it back to the title game. When you make it to the dance, after all, the remainder of the conference grows envious, and it's around this time of year that everyone begins thinking, "Why not us?"

Twelve seasons ago, Wofford was in familiar situation
When Mike Young, who had served as an assistant under Richard Johnson for over a decade, inherited the program in 2002, perhaps no one quite knew what a dynasty was about to ensue. Likewise, no one could have predicted that, twelve seasons later, a squad in a completely different position could be fixed in a familiar situation.

The unexact science of unwarranted SoCon scenarios
With only one day of regular season action remaining, it's time to take a look at some of the scenarios -- of which there are a huge, tangled bevy -- as to where the SoCon teams could find themselves during next weekend's tournament.

A tale of two halves: through resilience, defensive prowess, Terriers gradually growing out of 'slow start' habit
Nearly a month ago, Wofford -- then with a thinly-padded cushion of a lead in SoCon play -- almost succumbed to the vicious threat of Bob Hoffman's Mercer squad. It was defense, though, that kept them in the game; and it's still defense that's allowed the Terriers to stay on top.

Strong start for Wofford baseball a sign of the times
The temperature may have dipped into the low thirties; the biting winds may have brought shuddering effects. For a select few, though, that braved the elements at Russell C. King Field for Wofford baseball's season-opening weekend slate, there was a decided hint of assurance that this program is back in full force.

Weighty league battle coming up this evening
Remember when it was said that every game is a big one? Well, that's true, but this one has some added weight. Tonight, the Terriers will look to continue defending the BenJo as Chattanooga comes to town.

Defense keeping Terriers in check during tough SoCon slate
As the sun rises on another day, Mike Young's Terriers stand alone atop the Southern Conference. With an unconscionable effort, Wofford shook off a demoralizing setback to The Citadel in early January to win their next five consecutive matchups.

Wofford regains composure, knocks off Mercer
The Terriers continued rolling through the SoCon slate, winning their fifth straight in a too-close-for-comfort matchup with Mercer. With the 49-46 triumph, Wofford is now 9-1 in conference play, with an 18-5 overall mark.
